STAY DRY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

We are writing to express our strong conviction regarding the so-called beer and wine issue in Vineyard Haven. Our conviction grows out of a good many years of experience and observation in a considerable number of communities where we have been associated.

WORTH A LIFETIME

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

Better late than never.

This is just a thank you letter to all of the people who sent me well wishes, cards, flowers, and notes when I lost my sister, Eloise Downing-Allen, five years ago. I think of her every single day and still miss her dearly. Few people can appreciate what it is like to lose a sister who is also your best friend and advisor for over 70 years. Her passing devastated me, so I keep her picture by my side to this day.

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I was crushed to hear that David Flanders died over Thanksgiving. He was one of my heroes. Not only a man of honor, but the best baseball player Chilmark ever had. He had a try-out with the Boston Red Sox but turned down a lucrative career to play summer ball on the Vineyard. His home-run powers were legendary — swatting towering fly balls that disappeared forever in the pines at Toomey’s Field.

Editor’s Note: Under discussion for 30 years, a Chappaquiddick bike path is on the drawing board again. An application has been filed with the Edgartown Community Preservation Committee for funds, and an active debate is now under way on the separated island about the pros and cons of a bike path. What follows is a selection of letters that have been sent to the Community Preservation Committee.

Long Overdue

TAXING QUESTIONS

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

For years I have wondered how the town of Tisbury can discount residential property taxes (to which I confine what I write here) to year-round residents, requiring seasonal residents to pay more on the same assessed valuation. Your article of Nov. 21 demystifies the basis for this practice, but that does not make it seem any less questionable, though, for now, it is “legal.”
