Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

 

 

 

Aquinnah Voters Face Town Meeting Vote On $2 Million Budget

The last town meeting of the Island's political season takes place in Aquinnah on Tuesday, when residents will gather in the town hall at 7 p.m. to vote on a $2,056,058 operating budget and 14 warrant articles.

Although predicting the need for a Proposition 2 1/2 override, selectmen are in the dark as to the exact status of the town's free cash.

Tisbury Prepares for Key Election in Board of Selectmen Contest

Facing plans for big changes in Tisbury, town voters will decide next week whether experience or a fresh look will have a contested seat on the board of selectmen.

Denys Wortman said a number of people asked him to run and he decided to do just that. "The town should have a choice," said Mr. Wortman, who is running against incumbent Thomas Pachico.

If Tisbury residents approve more than $2.2 million in proposed expenditures on top of the town's $14.5 million operating budget, taxes for the average homeowner will increase by $160. But the possibility of higher taxes is just one of the issues voters will confront at Tuesday's annual town meeting, at the Tisbury School gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

Theodore Saulnier Takes Leadership Role in Tisbury

Just seven months into his tenure at the Tisbury police department, Lieut. Theodore A. (Ted) Saulnier is the man in charge. After the resignation of John McCarthy as police chief a week ago, the board of selectmen instructed Lieutenant Saulnier to perform the duties of the former chief.

Lieutenant Saulnier, 40, spoke with the Gazette Wednesday in the chief's office at the station on the harbor in Tisbury.
