Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

On the eve of the planned groundbreaking for the Tisbury sewage project, two Island officials raised serious safety concerns regarding the renovation plans even as the town faces a snag in starting construction work due to a delay at the state level.

Becoming a patient in a primary care physician's practice is now almost impossible for Islanders and visitors, but medical personnel are making an effort to alleviate the situation.

Primary physician practices, in the strictest sense, are closed to new patients, leaving those in search of a doctor in limbo.

Tim Walsh, who became the Martha's Vineyard Hospital's chief executive officer in August, said the lack of primary care physicians is a problem.

Sheriff Michael McCormack Takes Case for New County Jail Public

Amid the uncertainty of acquiring land for a new county jail on the grounds of Martha's Vineyard Airport, Dukes County sheriff Michael McCormack has kept busy reminding Island officials that the present jail and its site at the gateway to Edgartown's historic district is simply inadequate.

He launched a similar campaign when he first took office in January 1999.

Oceans and Coastline Face Environmental Troubles; Report Urges New Policies

A report that details the findings of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy halfway through its 18-month study of the nation's seas paints a bleak picture of coastal waters.

"The oceans are in trouble," the report says. "Our coasts are in trouble. Our marine resources are in trouble . . . all, perhaps, in serious trouble."

The Dukes County Commission initiated a feud with the Martha's Vineyard Airport commissioners by voting unanimously Wednesday evening to devote 24.4 acres of land on airport grounds to a county jail and training facility for emergency personnel.
