Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

 

 

 

Tisbury Selectmen Reject Bid to Bring Fox Ferries Into Harbor

Fox Navigation, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in Connecticut, wants to resume high-speed ferry service to Vineyard Haven harbor next season, but Tisbury selectmen denied the company a harbor use permit at a public hearing Tuesday night.

New Bedford Summit Pushes Fast Ferry

At a summit meeting held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum Saturday, officials from Martha's Vineyard, New Bedford and Falmouth agreed to urge the Steamship Authority to consider a new proposal for fast ferry service from the city to the Island.

New Bedford mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. invited Island officials to the summit after the SSA board of governors killed the fast ferry proposal by a vote of 2-1 last week.

Tisbury Town Counsel Declares Contract with Hospital Illegal

Tisbury's town counsel said this week the controversial amended contract among Island towns, the county and Martha's Vineyard Hospital is not a legal document.

David Doneski, of the Boston law firm Kopelman and Paige, sent his legal opinion to the Tisbury selectmen Monday afternoon.

County manager Carol Borer asked to address the town's concerns at a selectmen's meeting Tuesday after learning last week that the board questioned the legality of the agreement.

Athletic Field Plans Call for Expansion at the High School

Two diamonds each for baseball and softball and four soccer-sized athletic fields is what athletic director Paul Harrison envisions at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.

At a meeting last week of the school's land use subcommittee, Mr. Harrison presented an initial layout for his proposal. He said it could become a reality in five years.

"This is terrific," committee member Ralph Friedman said, looking over the plans.

Tisbury selectmen this week asked town counsel to study a controversial amended contract among Island towns, the county and Martha's Vineyard Hospital for possible legal problems.

At a Tisbury selectmen's meeting Tuesday evening, selectman Thomas Pachico said there seems to be "something shady" in the agreement administered by the subcommittee in charge of the dealings.
