After two weeks of tryouts and preseason practices, the spring sports season is underway at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Boys’ lacrosse, track, and the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams all had their first games and matches this week (scores were unavailable at press time), with baseball, softball, girls’ lacrosse and sailing kicking off over the weekend and into April.

If two is company and three is a crowd, it might follow that 10 is chaos. But if the 10 in question are the group of artists behind the Night Heron Gallery, the newest addition to Vineyard Haven’s formidable Main street lineup, the more appropriate word would be “community.”

Wednesday afternoon presented a study in opposites at the small campus just past the blinker on Barnes Road. For the most part, it was quiet outside, a misty spring snowfall dampening most sound. But from inside the large inflatable dome came the sounds of laughter and a recurring rhythm of thock, thock, thock.

In a classic example of saving the best for last, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School freshmen Tony Canha and Jason Gruner were declared the winners of the school’s 14th annual Linguini Bridge Contest on Monday after 1,500 pounds of crushing metal proved no match for the duo’s lightweight entry into the competition. Their bridge was the final weigh-in of the yearly event, which pits the unassuming combination of Prince linguini, Elmer’s glue and solid engineering strategy against the dual powers of pressure and gravity.

Anglers and armchair fishing fans alike will have the chance to hang a piece of the Martha’s Vineyard Bluefish and Striped Bass Derby on their wall by entering the derby awards ceremony raffle on Sunday at Nectar’s. Five artists, working in a variety of media, have donated pieces from their collections to the raffle in an effort representative of the overall camaraderie of the fishing community.

Field hockey turned in an impressive performance last week, pushing their season record to 6-2-2 with wins against league opponent Somerset on Thursday and Notre Dame-Hingham on Saturday.

Field hockey turned in an impressive performance last week, pushing their season record to 6-2-2 with wins against league opponent Somerset on Thursday and Notre Dame-Hingham on Saturday. Angela DeBettencourt and Megan McHugh scored for the Vineyard in their 2-1 Somerset win, with Maggie Johnson assisting on both goals. Johnson turned in a goal of her own in the 3-1 Saturday victory, as did McHugh and Genevieve Hammond. The team plays Barnstable in an away match today, and takes on Nauset next Tuesday.
