As the second month of winter sports gets under way, all four regional high school varsity teams maintain their winning records, with boys’ basketball still undefeated. The boys play Bishop Feehan at home tomorrow at 3 p.m. Girls’ hockey will also be on home ice tomorrow, taking on Hanover/Cohasset at 12:30 p.m.

From foreign films to home-grown musical acts, the best movies, books and albums of 2011, as selected by Vineyard experts, are sure to keep Islanders entertained through the winter.

“It was a great year to be a reader,” West Tisbury librarian Beth Kramer wrote in an e-mail to the Gazette. Her choices for the year may be from different genres, but all are, said Ms. Kramer, “beautifully rendered tales that took you around the world and deep into the hearts of their characters.” Her list follows.

The girls move to a 3-1 record after taking down Sandwich 67-59 at home on Saturday and defeating Nauset 70-43 on Tuesday.

The competition was world-class; the stakes raised to a near-peak. Mr. Shipway and catamaran captain Jean Brauer placed 22nd in the 22-boat field—somebody has to, after all.

The boys’ hockey teams are sponsoring a Stuff-A-Bus drive throughout the weekend, with proceeds going to benefit the Island Food Pantry. Bring canned goods to the Martha’s Vineyard Arena today from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to midnight (with a break for the teams’ games against Bourne), and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In addition to the boys’ 6 p.m. game on Saturday, be sure to support the girls’ squad in their 1 p.m. match against North Quincy.
