Daffodil Days
Each year in March, the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days provides an opportunity for Island residents to lend a helping hand in the fight against cancer.
Contributions received through the sale of daffodils help to keep the society’s vital resources in place for those who are or have been affected by cancer. The American Cancer Society also needs drivers to deliver daffodils in the community during the week of March 17. To volunteer or to place an order, please call 1-800-227-2345.
School Fundraiser
The Edgartown School will sponsor its second annual Midwinter Silent and Live Auction today to raise funds for the eighth grade class trip to Washington, D.C. The trip will cost $33,000.
The event is scheduled at the Oyster Bar & Grill, 57 Circuit avenue, Oak Bluffs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Clarence (Trip) Barnes is the auctioneer. More information is available by calling 508-627-3316.
Car Campaign
The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs in Massachusetts will now accept most any car. Cars will be sold at auction and the proceeds will be used to help the local clubs. Call 1-800-246-0493.
Cancer Society Benefit
The Vineyard Tennis Center will host Love At First Set, a tennis doubles tournament in honor of Mebbit Morano, Tami Pine-Willett, and Mary Walker, who all lost their battle with cancer in the past year and a half.
Inhaling water poses the greatest threat of death, far above hypothermia, for someone accidentally falling into cold water.
At a talk on cold-water immersion, a Vineyard doctor warned a gathering of 40 boat enthusiasts that the best way to stay alive is to keep your head above the water at all costs, especially in that first critical moment.
“You can be one of the best swimmers,” said Dr. Michael Jacobs, but unless you can keep your head above water in that first instant of immersion, you could drown.
Auditions for One Acts
Island Theatre Workshop will be presenting two programs of one acts on the second and third weekend in March.
Open auditions for these productions are on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. Katharine Cornell Theatre.
Leslie Stark, who made his directing debut in last year’s one act program, will return with another new play, This Seat Is Taken. Xavier Powers will offer Eugene O’Neill’s Sniper. Artistic director Lee Fierro and Kevin Ryan have not selected the works they will present.
