Lunch Hour Health Talks

A monthly series of lunch hour health talks with registered nurse Nicole Barlett will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center with a program on osteoporosis. She will describe ways for all ages to nourish bones with diet; exercise will be included as well as a hearty bowl of kale soup.

Each month’s theme will focus on health issues and information about therapies, medications, diet and exercise. There is no charge, but please RSVP at 508-696-4205, Monday through Friday.

The Vineyard Health Care Access Program is holding a public information meeting for legal permanent residents who used to have Commonwealth Care health insurance and lost their coverage due to state budget cuts. The new plan, called Commonwealth Care Bridge Health Plan, began for most of these members on Martha’s Vineyard on Nov. 1.

Representatives of CeltiCare, the health insurance company that offers the Commonwealth Care Bridge Health Plan, will discuss the benefits, costs and participating providers, and answer questions.

Kate Feiffer was elected to the board of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society at its Oct. 23 meeting.

A regular attendee at film society screenings for many years, Ms. Feiffer also assisted with the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival held in September.

Daily Show with Jon Stewart regular Wyatt Cenac stars in Medicine For Melancholy, a film that begins with two African-American twenty-somethings who wake up in bed together having no recollection of how they arrived there. The cinematic drama follows their next day in San Francisco, as they shrug off sleep but not quite each other.

The American Red Cross will be holding an adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Nov. 14 at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the class covers rescue breathing, first aid for choking, recognizing a heart attack, CPR skills, and care for injuries and sudden illness.

Cost is $50 for adult CPR/AED, or $60 for adult CPR/AED and first aid.

The first aid certification is valid for three years and the adult CPR/AED certification for one year.
