Featherstone Loves Chocolate
Vineyarders have been supporting the educations of former child laborers and orphans in Kenya since Galen Films first showed their child labor documentary, Stolen Childhoods, here in 2002. One village’s children, whose lives were being drained away through endless hours of work in the coffee fields, were put in school for a year by the filmmakers. Since then, many Islanders have joined them in continuing to help with school fees as the kids have succeeded in school beyond everyone’s expectations.
Writer Ben Greenman so craves human contact as part of his routine that he edits the front section of The New Yorker.
His fiction, including his latest novel, Please Step Back, he boxes off in the mornings and evenings at his Brooklyn home, between raising his five and eight year-old sons. Then he takes the subway into Manhattan and begins to put together the listings and features that make up Goings On, the weekly events guide of the globally-renowned magazine. It’s a job he has held for 10 years.
The American Red Cross will offer free volunteer classes at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School beginning Oct. 6 and running through Nov. 7.
After the training, volunteers become Red Cross certified, and with some experience can be deployed locally and nationally. The class is open to anyone 17 years and older who would like to become a Red Cross disaster action team member. There are no other prerequisites and all classes are free.
CPR and First Aid Class
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter, will be holding an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Oct. 10 at the YMCA at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It costs $50 for CPR/AED or $60 for CPR/AED and First Aid.
The evolution of American residential architecture is the subject of a lecture and slide show by Frank Shirley, who led the restoration of the Corbin-Norton house on Ocean Park, on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Edgartown.
The slide show contains stunning images of traditional architectural styles and their characteristic details. As project manager on the Corbin-Norton house for Design Associates, Mr. Shirley will discuss that landmark residence in his lecture.
