When the bell rings at 7:30 a.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, students stuff their cell phones, earbuds and smart watches into small gray pouches, sealing them with a magnetic lock.

Last week, six former students, now elders of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), gathered in the Aquinnah town hall to talk about the history of the Gay Head School and the impact it had on their lives.

Island students went back to school on Tuesday, some heading to a newly refurbished school in Tisbury, and others meeting new principals at the Edgartown, Chilmark and Oak Bluffs schools.

The Tisbury School’s two-year, $81 million renovation and addition — the largest building project in town history — is drawing to a close, with classes set to resume Sept. 3.

Seth Meyers, Emmy-award winning comedian and late-night host, will perform a stand-up show on Wednesday, August 28 at the Performing Arts Center to benefit the Friends of the Chilmark Preschool.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School committee this week approved an updated student handbook that strictly limits the use of personal devices during school hours.
