The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) has been awarded a half-million-dollar grant from the federal government to enhance its tribal court and to create a new wellness court to address “the devastation of alcohol and other drugs,” a tribal official said Thursday.

Warming waters around Martha’s Vineyard have discouraged what once were abundant fish. Top fisheries scientists with the National Marine Fisheries Service recently released a report citing the dramatic influence changing climate has had on at least one of the fish that used to spend a lot of time in these waters: Atlantic mackerel.

Atlantic mackerel have shifted away from the Vineyard and now are found more east and northeast, according to the report.

Ping Pong Season Begins

The all-Island club MV Table Tennis started its new season of play Sept. 13 at the West Tisbury School. The club, which is open to players of all ages and skill levels, will play weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at West Tisbury, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and at the Vineyard YMCA Saturdays and Sundays, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Classes started only yesterday at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, but the sports teams are well into the fall season, with a full week of play already under their belts.

The Royal Falmouth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Royal Megansett Nursing and Retirement Home in North Falmouth are among the centers that have purchased newly FDA-approved fluid monitors to help patients with heart, kidney and other fluid-related health issues.

Both are part of the Royal Health Group, owner of six skilled nursing facilities south of Boston

Three baseball players from the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks were named to the Futures Collegiate Baseball League Post Season All-Stars: Shortstop Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University in Pennsylvania), designated hitter Jeramy Matos (University of Central Florida) and utility player Eric Jensen (Wheaton).
