The boys’ basketball and hockey teams extended their win streaks this week as league play continued for the Vineyarders. Though the girls’ teams split their games, all of the varsity squads hold winning records at the season midpoint.

Youth Hockey

The Ryan Mone Memorial Tournament, hosted by Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey, will be played at the MV Arena this weekend. Games begin this evening at 5 p.m. and continue Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. and Sunday at 7:30 a.m..

Last Saturday, the MV Peewees played Hetland to a 2-2 tie with Jacob Gunderson scoring first for the Vineyard and Justin Alexander potting the second goal.

On Sunday, the Mites took on 12-0 Nantucket in a double-header, falling 6-2 in the first game and holding the Whalers to a 4-4 tie in the second.

Two teams from the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey League received a late holiday gift last week, as the Squirt 1 and 2 travel teams made their most monumental journey yet. The 9- and 10-year olds played a friendly game at frozen Fenway Park on Jan. 3.

Yoga Teacher Training

On Saturday, Jan. 14, FLY Yoga will offer a preview of their spring teacher training school with Sherry Sidoti. The event takes place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Tapas Hot Yoga in Vineyard Haven (near the Steamship Authority)

There will be a donation-based 60-minute yoga class followed by question and answer session. The 200 Hour certified teacher training will take place from April 2 through 13 and May 14 to 25 on Martha’s Vineyard.

Alzheimer’s Support

A group for those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other dementia will begin meeting on Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. for the next 12 weeks. The first meeting takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Topics to be discussed include managing medications, the lonely and isolating experience of caretaking, behavior issues, activities of daily living, taking care of yourself, talking with others about dementia, managing family issues and more.
