It sometimes seems, when trying to get on or off the Vineyard, that the Steamship Authority ferries are always booked.
But that apparently is not right. There is persistent excess capacity, and boat line senior managers have colored graphs and spreadsheets to prove it.
Today, when the SSA governors convene on Nantucket for their June meeting, they will have those graphs and spreadsheets in front of them as they begin talking about next year’s operating schedule, and possibly even the fall operating schedule.
Trap Championship
On April 27, Bob De Lisle of Edgartown picked up his second club trap championship since 2005 at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Club. Participants took aim at two rounds of 25 targets. Tim O’Bryan of Edgartown placed second.
Frost Biters Race
Warm weather arrived on Sunday, June 8, for the Frost Biters and Winter Guys as they undertook their third Sunday race of the season. Five boats gathered for the 2 p.m. start at buoy Nun 6 in Vineyard Haven harbor for another race around the Zig Zag Course.
The sailors raced to the Red and White Bell buoy in the Sound, then to Nun 4 off West Chop, then across the harbor entrance to Can 23A off East Chop, and then back into the harbor to finish at Nun 6.

Larry’s Tackle Shop has a new owner. He is the same guy who has been behind the counter and stocking the walls with fishing gear for years.
Steve V. Purcell has stepped from managing the store to owner and he did it with little fanfare back in March.
For him, this is the realization of a dream. Though he has managed the store for years, he has run it as though he owned it.
“I don’t know what I would have done without thinking about the store,” he said.
Leanne Giordano, restaurant manager at one of the Island’s most popular — and busiest — family restaurants, is fully staffed for the summer. And she has a running list of more than 150 prospective waiters, waitresses and bussers to call just in case a position opens.
Mosquito Survey
A joint effort is planned for the Vineyard in July, August and part of September to trap and collect mosquitoes that may be vectors for Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.
The Island boards of health, Dukes County, the state Bureau of Laboratory and Enviromental Science, and the Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute are cooperating in the effort. More information is available by calling T.J. Hegarty at 508-696-4888 or individual town health agents.
