The 27th annual John Havlicek Celebrity Fishing Tournament made a lot of money for the Genesis Fund last weekend, and not all the draw was the celebrities who attended. Much of it had to do with good fishing, and that success was tied to Vineyard and Nantucket fishermen.
With the final numbers still being worked out, the long weekend event on the Vineyard grossed at least $340,000, slightly more than last year. The gathering included a live and silent auction at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.
Holmes Hole Sailors
Begin Summer Season
The Holmes Hole Sailing Association started its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a tune-up race in the harbor on June 15.
The weather was cool, with a gray overcast sky and intermittent rain. The wind was east-northeast at about eight to 15 knots. Four skippers posted at the start. The race committee opted for a 5.3-mile course.
Katie Mayhew is one of three finalists in the Boston Pops High School Sing-Off. She sang with the 75-musician, full orchestra on Wednesday night, standing near conductor Keith Lockhart.
The 16-year-old singer will perform again with the Boston Pops on Tuesday, July 1 at Symphony Hall.
Patricia N. Nanon
A celebration of the life of Patricia N. Nanon, Vineyard resident and founder of The Yard, who died Feb. 29, will be held Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. at The Yard, Middle Road, Chilmark. Those who plan to attend are asked to call 508-645-9662.

When Michael Valentino, owner of Chappy clothing store on Main street Edgartown, addressed selectmen this week he was careful to preface his comments with pleasantries about his fellow merchant at Number Two Main street.
“Gerry has been very cooperative,” he said, referring to Gerret C. Conover, of the Boathouse private club and the Atlantic, previously known as the Navigator restaurant. The building, which is next door to Chappy, has been undergoing extensive renovation since September 2007.
Then Mr. Valentino launched into it.
