Thomas and Barbara Furino of Edgartown have won the 2008 President’s Award from the Central Massachusetts Safety Council for their efforts to promote safe driving by teenagers.

Their son, David Furino, 17, was killed in an automobile accident at Katama with fellow student Kevin Johnson on May 7, 2004. The Furinos subsequently created a nonprofit organization, Martha’s Vineyard Drive for Life.

West Tisbury police have been kept busy in the past two weeks with calls for a series of incidents ranging from domestic disputes to minor accidents.

On June 12 police responded to a home on State Road where they removed a person from a job site. Christopher McCloud, 41, of Chilmark, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.

Philanthropist Awards

The Planned Giving Council of Cape Cod is looking for nominations for awards honoring distinguished service to philanthropy on Cape Cod and the Islands.

The awards will be presented during the 12th annual Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod scheduled for Nov. 5. A special nominating committee made up of nonprofits, estate planners and other community members will choose an outstanding volunteer, an outstanding businessperson and an outstanding philanthropist.

Announcing Sabrina

Adriana Robadel Alves and Ronon DaCosta Alves of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Sabrina Robadel Alves, born on June 16 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Sabrina weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

The Dukes County commissioners found themselves on the defensive last week when about a dozen residents crowded a public hearing to voice their discontent with existing and proposed rules for Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach.

The commissioners had said they wanted to strike a balance between preserving the beach and protecting its nesting birds while also allowing public access.

Also, due to an increase in requests to use the public beach for large private functions, the commissioners sought to update the beach rules so as to discourage such events.
