Nature & Science
It is very weird for this Island girl to spend a week at 8,000 feet and walk in snow in June. Last week I attended the American Birding Association Conference in Snowbird, Utah.
The mountains were spectacular but so was Salt Lake. The variety of habitats I visited was mind-boggling.

Leading a tour of the Sengekontacket, Felix Neck guide Emily Smith rounded Sarsons Island Friday in her red kayak and stopped. Something in the pond had caught her eye. She backtracked, peered into the water for a few moments and then pulled out a horseshoe crab. The kayakers on the tour crowded around for a look, bumping their boats together as they packed in. She flipped the crab over to show its small legs squirming in the air and began spelling out facts about the creature.
Friday, June 27: Hot and muggy afternoon. Temperature reaches the mid-80s. A gentle breeze in the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest. Bicyclists speed along the path. Daylilies and tiger lilies line the road in North Tisbury. Late-afternoon strollers on Main street in Vineyard Haven. Less hot. Fog late.
On Wednesday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. the Polly Hill Arboretum kicks off its summer lecture series with Chanticleer Gardens horticulturalist and woodworker Dan Benarcik.
