Jupiter is the big man on campus in the August night sky. While not a star athlete, or even a star, it is certainly among the biggest and brightest.

Friday, August 1: Clear and sunny day. Clouds hug close to the southern sky over the Atlantic Ocean. Clear skies overhead at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in the afternoon. Clouds obscure the sunset. Light breeze. The Milky Way shines overhead. Jupiter is above the southeastern sky.

In just a few weeks, the agricultural hall grounds in West Tisbury will be abuzz with activity. Already there are signs that the annual Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Livestock Show and Fair — the first day is August 21 — is just around the corner.

Friday, July 25: Heavy rain overnight. The landscape is dripping wet from a night of thunderstorms. More storms in the afternoon. Loud rumbling thunder echoes through the streets of Vineyard Haven. Large puddles slow nightlife traffic in Oak Bluffs.

For a moment there, the jam project seemed to be a huckleberry over my persimmon.

This old English saying means just a bit over my ability; and when my huckleberry jam turned rock hard last week, I thought that I might be in just that kind of pickle. With the Slow Food dinner a day away and six person-hours invested in the picking, cleaning, and preparing of the wild huckleberry jam, I needed an intervention. Not necessarily divine, just a solution to my unspreadable jam.
