CONFESSION
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
I am writing to confess a sin of omission. Last week we distributed our summer newsletter in your paper. The newsletter described the effects of the recession on the Vineyard and highlighted nonprofits that have gone the extra mile to help the community get through this crisis.
One effect of the recession was the Oak Bluffs School closing for the summer due to budget cuts, and this meant the YMCA camp lost its venue and had to close for this summer.
DEEP TROUBLE
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
If Laurie David and C. Dean Metropolous think that they are stewards of the environment, we are in deep, deep trouble. First we have Ms. David, supposed environmentalist, and her landscaper saying they knew nothing of the strip-mining project on her property, and then we have Mr. Metropolous on Cow Bay clear-cutting sensitive conservation land with the lame excuse that he’s donated money to the Farm Institute and cares about the environment.
TIMMY’S TREE
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
Regarding Mrs. Whipple’s tree named for her son Timmy, which was mutilated by the construction of a parking space, and displayed on these pages — perhaps not life and death as Mrs. Whipple so delicately states, but certainly front page news in the hearts of those who love this beautiful Island.

CALL IN THE NIGHT
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
DESPERATELY NEEDED
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
After four years of being on the Chilmark housing committee and with a success rate of one home site in those four years I decided to see if it was possible to privately create housing faster. I found a great piece of land in West Tisbury abutting a sweet path to the school and imagined the generations of families to come that would appreciate the location and I was empowered by this vision.
TURNED OFF
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
Tilton House
Editors, Vineyard Gazette:
Hello. I am wondering if anyone could send me some photos of the Tilton house as it looks today. Our family tree goes back to the late Benjamin S. Tilton of Chilmark.
