Farm & Garden

Summertime Bounty

I'm a big fan of bad weather. Monday morning's unexpected rain gave me a much-deserved day off.

The Grey Barn and Farm of Chilmark began as an idea in Dubai, the ostensible city of the future in the United Arab Emirates. And now owners Eric and Molly Glasgow are edging toward the day when they will have created a viable dairy farm on the former Rainbow Farm property in Chilmark that they purchased from David Douglas earlier this summer.

I love a rainy Saturday. Last week I trudged around in the vegetable garden in full rain gear. I picked several containers of food needing to be processed. I harvested the herbs (parsley, celery leaf, and basil) and a big basket of tomatoes, not to mention beets and cabbage. I then spent the day in the kitchen preparing everything. I watched Senator Kennedy’s funeral and gabbed on the phone.

I finally surrendered and took the lawn mower to my vegetable garden. There were areas where weeds were chest high. It stalled out repeatedly, with me using expletives and ripping my arm out of the socket restarting it over and over. Nevertheless, I am happy to report I found several areas where food was growing unconcerned by the tangled mess.
