Summertime Bounty

I'm a big fan of bad weather. Monday morning's unexpected rain gave me a much-deserved day off.

One after-Christmas holiday project I try to accomplish is a quick inspection of my pantry. I store potatoes, onions, garlic and winter squashes but there is always one rotten apple attempting to spoil the batch so to speak. Happily I only found a few soft onions and one bad spaghetti squash which was in the process of taking the finish off the floor. It is always a challenge to see if I can keep it intact until it reaches the compost bucket.

I claim full responsibility for the typographical errors in my last week’s column. My handwriting could use some improvement. When I first began writing for the paper almost three years ago I used a typewriter. It finally gave out and I was unable to purchase new ribbon. Now, I know I should use a computer but honestly, I just plain refuse. About a year ago, I began handwriting, and Lauren from the Gazette staff is kind to collect it from my kitchen counter weekly. I recently have switched from ballpoint pen to an American made Ticonderoga number two pencil.

Trudy Taylor stopped by for a visit. We have common interests in canaries and gardening. We discussed our love for chicken and how many meals one can eat from one bird. I believe we settled on five for a small one. The first night, of course, can be enjoyed with several side dishes. Of late, I’ve been cooking a roaster in the Dutch oven in the wood cook stove. I never add water to meat. I find it toughens it — better to let it stew in its own juices. I’ve been known to do that myself.
