Seventy-five years ago today, the Gazette reported that the new Edgartown Lighthouse was lit for the first time. The cast iron tower dates to 1875 and was floated to Edgartown by barge from Ipswich in 1939 to replace the original wooden lighthouse that had fallen into disrepair.
Just after 11 a.m. Saturday morning, people emptied out of stores and flooded the streets of Vineyard Haven as the Northeast Navy Marching Band marched down Main street. This Flag Day parade was held in honor of the 50th anniversary of the opening of Veterans Memorial Park.
Coop De Ville is the unofficial headquarters for World Cup fever on the Island. The Oak Bluffs waterfront bar was a colorful scene Thursday during the opening match between Brazil and Croatia.
Today is Flag Day. A rededication of Veterans Park in Vineyard Haven begins when the Northeast Navy Marching Band steps off at 11 a.m. from St. Augustine’s Church. The park was bought and built by American Legion Post 257 in 1964.
After 62 years apart, Cynthia Riggs and Howard Attebery now live happily and very much in love in West Tisbury. On May 25, they celebrated their one year anniversary as husband and wife.
