Bid for Rising Tide
Rising Tide Therapeutic Equestrian Center are having a gift sale/silent auction every day from Saturday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Farm Stand behind Alley’s General Store in West Tisbury from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Much of the center’s funding has been cut, and it is their policy to never turn anyone away because of financial restraints, so the funds raised from this sale will benefit everyone in the upcoming winter program. For details, call 508-693-6112.
The history and future of New England fisheries will be discussed this Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m., when Julie Wormer, New England Oceans Program Director for the Environmental Defense Fund will present a lecture, Catch Shares: Our Fishing Future? at the Chilmark Public Library. The lecture is sponsored by the Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund.
In their pale pink tights and soundless slippers, teeny ballerinas scurry across the vast stage just a little too quickly in this rehearsal; when the lights come up tomorrow and Sunday, the troupe will be hidden underneath the huge, stilt-supported skirt of Mother Ginger in the annual Island production of The Nutcracker.
“Mother Ginger can’t move that fast,” gently chides artistic director Beth Vages, who is staging this holiday ballet for her 23rd time, her 12th on Martha’s Vineyard.
Talking Pictures
The North Water Gallery hosts photographer David Fokos for an artist talk on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. Now living in San Diego, Mr. Fokos is back on the Vineyard, where he is most well known for his square black and white photographs with long exposures, ranging from 20 seconds up to 30 minutes. These exposures filter out what Mr. Fokos calls visual noise to reveal the fundamental underlying forms of our world. All are welcome at the gallery on North Water street in Edgartown. For details, call 508-627-6002.
Vineyard Players
Falmouth Academy seniors Janaye Rooney and Clea Baumhofer, both of Vineyard Haven, will perform and have solos with Falmouth Academy’s Chamber Orchestra for Holidays at Heritage, at concert at Heritage Plantation in Sandwich on Friday, Dec. 11 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Falmouth Academy’s orchestra will play Corelli’s Christmas Concerto Grosso and two movements of Schubert’s fifth symphony.
