Poetry Workshop
Chilmark poet Donald Nitchie’s poetry workshop — with some reading of sample poems and in-class writing but mostly critiques to tune up participants’ work (you have a choice of getting only positive feedback, or actual criticism) — is back on at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs.
The $50, six-class series began this week but is open for newcomers on Wednesdays through Dec. 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Reading, Knotting and Hula Hoop
Adult Continuing Education of Martha’s Vineyard is enjoying its most successful semester yet, with record numbers of classes and students — and you can still sign up to be part of it, for one night or a whole course.
The Edgartown School presents the classic musical play The Wizard of Oz on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
Billed as the perfect blend of Joni Mitchell and Ella Fitzgerald, singer-songwriter Sarah Blacker will take the stage Friday, Nov. 6, at the Vineyard Playhouse for a new monthly entertainment called Spoon in the Moon Coffeehouse.
New: Friday Flicks
A season of Friday flicks kicks off tonight at the Vineyard Playhouse with The Haunting screening at 7:30 p.m.
In association with Island Entertainment, the playhouse will show Shirley Jackson’s 1963 ghostly thriller starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. This first in a monthly classic movie series is suitable for ages 12 and up.
Admission is $5 plus a nonperishable food donation for the Island Food Pantry. It’s general seating, with no advance sales, and proceeds benefit the playhouse.
Video for Stutterers
Stuttering is a problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers and speech-language pathologists at the public libraries in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury, in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-Age Child Who Stutters, is being distributed free of charge to public libraries nationwide.
