The Vineyard Playhouse will hold open auditions for a new play by MJ Bruder Munafo, My Mom Is Trying To Ruin My Life, based on the book by Kate Feiffer. The playhouse is also preparing to audition for the summer production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by MJ Bruder Munafo.
On Wednesday, May 5, any time from 4 to 6 p.m., actors can arrive at the playhouse prepared to read a short scene from the play to be provided at the audition.
Vineyard BellyDance and Revue will perform on Friday, May 7, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre.
The troupe of seven dancers will show a variety of dance styles from the Middle East, and works by numerous choreographers. Guest performers will offer live drumming and jazz singing, salsa, ballroom dancing and the Brazilian art of capoeira.
The troupe includes dancers Suzanna Nickerson, Amy Fournier, Sheila Rayyan, Jamie O’Gorman, Betsy Smith, Rhonda Backus and Pat Szucs. Carol Loud and Sarah Nevin will be providing live music.
Bill Buckley Art Show
Vineyard Views, an art show by Edgartown painter Bill Buckley, opens at the Chilmark Public Library on Saturday, May 1, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. All are welcome.
The show includes paintings of familiar Island scenes, most in acrylic on canvas in vibrant colors.
BravÉncore is hosting Seats for Scotland, a gala dinner at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown on Thursday, April 29, in an effort to raise money for the travel expenses of the 17 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students invited to represent their country in Edinburgh this August, at the 2010 Fringe Festival, the largest theatre festival in the world.
Pedalers will move for people whose own motion is compromised when the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 17th Island biking event, Ride the Vineyard, takes off from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School on May 1.
All donors who give blood at the American Red Cross drive on Tuesday, April 27, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs, will receive a free umbrella.
School vacations and mild spring weather have contributed to a drop in blood donations. As a result the Type O negative blood supply has dropped to critical levels and is expected to dip lower through the end of the month.
