Calling Volunteers
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter, is looking for additional volunteers in disaster services and for general support in the next few months. Training will be provided free of charge.
Learn Anatomy
A special anatomy workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31 at the Yoga Barn in West Tisbury, taught by Anne Gilroy, associate professor at UMass Medical School, Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Preregister before May 23 for $45 per day or $80 for both days. Walk-ins pay $55 per day, $100 for two days. Send checks (payable to Anne Gilroy) to Gary Fudem, P.O. Box 535, Chilmark MA 02535. Especially useful for yoga and fitness instructors,, the course is open to all.
Vineyard residents are invited to attend a free Berklee College of Music workshop demonstrating the Power of Music for Health and Education on Thursday, May 14, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the large dining room at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The workshop will be presented by Karen Wacks and Wendy Krueger, music therapy professors at Berklee.
As cases of swine flu (H1N1) virus multiplied elsewhere, Island towns were quick to issue guidance this week about taking precautions and being prepared should the virus spread. In Massachusetts, Department of Public Health officials confirmed two cases in Lowell.
Suicide Prevention Grant
The Community Health Network of the Cape & Islands and Community Health Center of Cape Cod have received a $300,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to implement youth suicide prevention strategies across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
The focus of the grant will be to train the broader community to recognize young people at risk and intervene quickly.
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is looking to train CPR and First Aid instructors to teach classes on the Vineyard.
Instructor training courses will be held in Hyannis on Fridays, May 8 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of the course is $145, but financial arrangements are possible.
This course trains you to teach basic level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses for lay responders. These courses include Standard First Aid, Standard First Aid with AED, Adult CPR, Adult CPR/AED, Infant and Child CPR and First Aid.
