Pilates for Health

A pilates exercise class for for anyone interested in fitness runs every Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center, 34 Pine Tree Road in Vineyard Haven.

Instructor Brenda Correa demonstrates how to develop core strength and improve balance, posture and flexibility. She also teaches breathing techniques. Participants should bring a mat. For details, call 508-696-4205.

Teen Girls Group

The Adolescent Balance Living Experience (ABLE) program — offered through the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard for girls ages 11 to 14 — is seeking referrals for the spring session which begins Monday, April 14. This group is free of charge and meets twice a week for eight weeks. ABLE focuses on healthy nutrition and exercise, as well as how to stand up to bullies and be a good friend. The Vineyard Health Care Access Program is sponsoring a workshop for local employers about rules regarding health insurance enacted as part of the state’s health care reform program.

The workshop is set for Thursday, April 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in the library conference room.

Spring can be a time of reawakening, recharging and renewing: time to reevaluate exercise goals and get in shape before summer.

Walking is an enjoyable and easy way to get moving. You cannot pass a magazine rack without seeing headlines extolling the values of walking. We are fortunate in that the Vineyard features a number of trails of varying degrees of intensity.

Trails offer respite from the hectic day-to-day concerns. They’re a chance to get out and enjoy the Island at its unspoiled best: a good pair of walking shoes and you’re off.

Hold That Thought! Cognition and MS is the title of a video screening Sunday, April 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center, 34 Pine street, Vineyard Haven.

This 30-minute video about multiple sclerosis that explores the effects of cognitive difficulties on people’s lives. Cognition includes learning, memory, problem solving, information processing, attention and concentration.

Experts share information about the effects of MS and tools that can be used to improve cognitive ability.
