Dementia Care

Family caregivers or professionals may attend a Dementia Certificate Program course on Friday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional Transit Authority in Edgartown.

Tuition for this training from Alz-heimer’s Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is $85 and includes a certificate of completion and 6 CEUs.

Tuition for family caregivers is $10 to cover the costs of materials.

CPR/First Aid Classes

The Red Cross offers CPR and First Aid classes on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the YMCA in Oak Bluffs.

The class is in two parts: from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is Adult and Child CPR/AED (rescue breathing, first aid for choking, recognizing a heart attack); the cost is $65 for this certification only. The First Aid class follows, until 4:30 p.m.; the cost is $80 total for both classes.

Yoga Workshop

Say goodbye to the hectic summer and ease into the golden rays of fall with a three-day yoga workshop at the Beach Plum Inn in Chilmark. Beginning Sept. 13 and running through Sept. 15, classes will be held throughout each day and offer something for every skill level. Refreshments are provided for those who sign up for the full-day sessions.

Cost is $15 per class, $100 per day, and $250 for the full three days.

Care for Dementia

A dementia certificate program will be offered for professionals who want to gain more knowledge about dementia and the tools for providing better care. The program consists of six hours of training over two days. Classes will be held on Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The tuition is $85 and includes a certificate of completion and six CEUs. The cost for family caregivers is $10 to cover the costs of materials.

Let’s Move Martha’s Vineyard has done some moving of its own this week, after a three-day northeaster cancelled most outdoor events from Monday through Wednesday. The kickoff event has been rescheduled for tomorrow in Oak Bluffs. Organizer Erin Bayer Santos said most of the activities will stay the same as before with a few schedule shifts and additions.

A free educational seminar on multiple sclerosis (MS) will be held Monday, August 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Howes House, on State Road in West Tisbury.

The program, Ask the Doctor: Symptom Management in MS, is presented by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and features Ann Cabot.

Dr. Cabot practices neurosurgery in Lebanon, N.H. where she is involved in MS research and focuses on the treatment of people with MS.
