Oyster season in Chilmark is set to begin on Monday after the board of selectmen approved the opening of the short season.
At the selectmen’s weekly meeting on Tuesday, the board approved a recommendation from the shellfish committee that permits two heaping bushels a day, Monday through Wednesday. The season ends April 30. Shellfish constable Isaiah Scheffer said half a dozen oystermen had expressed interested in permits — “a controlled amount,” Mr. Scheffer added.
The Chilmark selectmen will go behind closed doors later this month to discuss the conduct of the town human resource board, following two meetings last month that allegedly involved inappropriate language by board members.
At their meeting Tuesday the selectmen reviewed a written complaint from beach committee member Wayne Iacono about digital recordings of the board meetings last month that were posted on the town website and later removed.
Vineyard programs that depend on federal funding are expected to see little impact, at least in the short term, from the much-publicized automatic budget cuts set to take effect in Washington today. But leaders in Island education, elder and health services said next year could be a different story.
