T here’s something magical about the first snowfall. The soft, white blanket coating the ground, the ever so quiet tinkling of snowflakes as they land on your face. It’s a moment in time where everything else manages to stand still, a moment when you can close your eyes and dream.

As the moon rose over Sengekontacket Pond on Sunday night, Felix Neck education coordinator Cristina Pereira led a small group of adults through the trails of the sanctuary. The next day, Ms. Pereira guided a group of high school students for their morning lesson about otter scat remains.

But no matter who Ms. Pereira or other educators at Felix Neck are working with, the goal remains the same: to encourage Islanders to engage with their natural habitat.

Let’s be honest, not everything gets better with age. But fortunately for Islanders, Mermaid Farm’s feta cheese does. The flavor gets richer, the texture softer, and if it’s covered in brine, the feta can last up to a year.

Farm owner Allen Healy and cheese maker Jackee Foster are showing people the way real feta is supposed to taste.

“We’re trying to change people’s perception of what feta traditionally is,” Ms. Foster said, taking a break from pouring brine into the pints containing perfect prism shapes.

At a special town meeting this coming Tuesday night, Aquinnah voters will be asked to buy land for a new affordable housing site and approve a new tax amnesty program, among other things.

Moderator Michael Hebert will preside over the special session that begins at 7 p.m. in the old town hall. There are nine articles on the warrant.

The community preservation committee is asking voters to approve borrowing $240,000 to buy a 6.3-acre parcel of land at 45 State Road to be converted into either affordable homes or rental units.

Attitude!” shouted high school cheerleading coach Stephanie Andrade before last Friday’s football game against Nauset. The eight members of the squad were warming up before the game by practicing their dance routine. Staggered in two lines, the all-girl squad marched head-on like models on a runway.

Friday was a warmup for this weekend’s Island Cup game. “We perform at our fullest for every game, but the Nantucket game is the biggest one, so we are preparing,” senior Ashleen Cafarelli said.

Still unhappy with next year’s early budget estimates that they believe unfairly saddles the town with a disproportionate share of cost, the Edgartown selectmen are moving ahead with plans to withdraw from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

The selectmen will now put the question before voters at a special town meeting slated for Dec. 14.
