The Chilmark zoning board of appeals upheld two building permits for working farm wind turbines on Wednesday night at a standing-room-only public hearing that saw wide-ranging and at times heartfelt debate.

The turbine permits are for the Grey Barn and Allen farms, both on South Road in Chilmark. The hearing went on for three hours, and in the end the board of appeals also ruled that the turbines did not need to go to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for review.

Edgartonians are fiercely proud of their narrow streets, the widow’s walks, 18th century homes, gardens with perfect roses on white picket fences. They prefer you enjoy it by foot (careful with the thorns); as the town Web site explains, “To view and appreciate this town fully, you must walk its streets.”

Downtown residents fiercely reinforced the message at a public hearing on Tuesday, pleading with selectmen to keep four-wheeled tours away from their village.

Young people grow agitated when Facebook changes profile settings, while many of their parents grow frustrated just trying to navigate online shopping.

Katie LeClerc Greer is working to bridge the gap and reassure kids, parents and teachers that technology is not so scary after all.
