Flags all across Edgartown - at Memorial Wharf, the county courthouse, Memorial Park and the American Legion Post 186 - flew at half-staff this week to mourn Barbara B. Nevin, a leading citizen of the town, who died unexpectedly on Friday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. Mrs. Nevin was 79 and the widow of Dr. Robert W. Nevin.

Paul Brissette, chairman of the high school’s art, design and technology department, has been selected to participate in the Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad Program to China this summer. He talks about this remarkable honor as an opportunity, not an achievement, which is how he talks about almost everything he’s ever done. As has been true for most of his career at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, Mr. B, as he is affectionately known, deflects attention from himself to his department.

Editor’s note: On Sunday, Nicole Galland posted a thank-you on Facebook for all who attended the Saturday show by Shakespeare for the Masses, a loose group that stages hour-long edited-for-fun versions of the Bard’s plays for free; such a thank-you is not an unusual thing for her to post. Last week I spoke at the renowned South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. SXSW, as it is usually written, began as a music, and then film, festival and is one of the most “happening” events on the planet. Recently, a third component joined film and music: “Interactives.” This means cyber-stuff and all that 21st-century jazz. Although I have a lifelong terror and ineptness in this arena, I accepted a surprise invitation to speak at an “interactives” panel, and headed for sunny Texas, optimistic I would feel right at home.

LONDON — Vineyard vocalist Katie Mayhew made her international debut at London’s Cadogan Hall, singing her signature Sondheim song Being Alive, which won her the 2008 Boston Pops high school sing-off and the notice of the British director who staged Wednesday night’s Inspiration Awards for Women ceremony.

This has been a remarkably satisfying season for Island theatregoers. We have available not only our regular offerings — the Vineyard Playhouse’s mainstage season and Shakespeare in the amphitheatre, Camp Jabberwocky, Children’s Theatre, special events at the Yard — but also an energetic new theatre company, ArtFarm Enterprises, which has presented some glorious work in collaboration with Vineyard Arts Project and will soon be presenting more with the Actors Shakespeare Project from Boston.
