Jeff Lynch wasted no time getting down to business on the day he was appointed West Tisbury shellfish constable last month. He’d been out on the water earlier in the day, and he already knew what needed to be done.

Chappaquiddick ferry company owner Peter Wells has called for bids to build a new Chappy ferry — a spare, as he calls it.

It would be called City of Chappaquiddick, named after a Chappy ferry going back 60 years, if it is built at all, Mr. Wells said.

It would look very much like the On Time III. But the next Chappy ferry might be built of aluminum, he said, unlike the marine plywood and fiberglass boats now in service.

The new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital is open for business. The freshly painted halls are bustling with medical staff, and state-of-the-art stretchers sit empty in the emergency room hallway.

And this week most of the rooms are occupied.

The current in the Edgartown harbor has changed again.

It has been three years since the Norton Point opening connected Katama Bay to the sea, and the water movement through the harbor has gained another measure of unpredictability: currents running through Edgartown harbor are far greater than tidal.

Plus, the three years of increased current has changed the way boaters use the harbor and the way bathers use the beaches.

A top state fisheries official told a Vineyard gathering on Friday afternoon that it is not feasible to restore the 61-year-old state lobster hatchery — at least not for raising young lobsters for release.

“We have no evidence that we did enhance the wild population to any significant degree at all,” said Paul Diodati, director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. “That and the cost in the past 10 years of government has become a real concern. Funding has withered,” he added.

When the topsail schooner Shenandoah goes sailing this summer, credit for some of the work this spring in preparing the beautiful wooden vessel for another season goes to a 26-year-old West Tisbury resident. Working in his shop in the woods, Myles Thurlow built and restored several important spars on the 47-year-old Shenandoah.
