The best treat available in the local fish market, and in the restaurants, is something you haven’t eaten in a while — black sea bass, another Vineyard waterfront success story.

We haven’t had the option of buying black sea bass in local fish markets during the summer for at least a half dozen years, if not more. If you have an aversion to oily tasting fish like bluefish, this is your kind of fish. Black sea bass is a white delicate flaky fish that is perfect any way it is cooked.

Friday, August 23: Overcast in the morning. Bicyclists speed along the bike path at the State Beach, while the first beachgoers arrive. Partly sunny. Breezy.

The 36th annual George Moffett Race, the premiere end-of-summer sailboat event, returns Saturday, Sept. 7.

The monohull race is a late morning, all afternoon handicapped contest involving sailboats of all sizes, from 16 to more than 40 feet.

If you love eating fresh-caught fluke you should rush to the fish market and buy it today. Today is the last day commercial fishermen are permitted to land and sell fluke. After today the only options are to catch it yourself or befriend a recreational angler. Fluke, also called summer flounder, is a Vineyard success story.

Friday, August 16: Fair weather for the agricultural society fair. West Tisbury is bustling with activity. All roads lead to the fair. Many of those dirt roads are dusty. Draft horse pull draws a big crowd. Oak Bluffs fills up with visitors in the late afternoon for a night of fireworks. The sky is clear. A pretty sunset is the opener for the fireworks.
