Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

A brief but acrimonious rift between the promoters of a concert planned for this summer in Ocean Park featuring the Boston Pops and a group of Island charities who plan to use the event for fund-raising has been patched up — at least for now.

An Indiana woman was cited by Tisbury police on Friday after she reportedly veered over into the oncoming lane of traffic on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and collided with a R.M. Packer fuel delivery truck.

Laura Harris, 35, of Indianapolis, Ind., was reportedly driving north towards Vineyard Haven in a Volkswagen Passat when she crossed over the center line and collided with the passenger side of the fuel truck, causing extensive front-end damage to both vehicles. The windshield was blown out of the Volkswagen and the vehicle’s axle was broken.

State Rep. Eric T. Turkington, who represents the Cape and Islands, has proposed three amendments to a transportation bond bill which would allocate more than $1.5 million in state transportation funding for three Vineyard projects.

A recent project in Oak Bluffs to cull the population of Canada geese by addling their eggs has been completed. Town shellfish and environmental officials hope the project will reduce droppings on public greens, including Ocean Park, and reduce bacteria levels in coastal ponds, including Sengekontacket and Farm Pond.
