Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

Sunday's moped accident that claimed the life of a 41-year-old New York city woman has reopened old wounds for Islanders who want to see stronger safety standards for the two-wheeled vehicles, and others who want them banned from the Vineyard altogether.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has found elevated levels of lead in two samples of the Edgartown water supply, a violation of state clean drinking water standards.

The violation forces the Edgartown water department to perform additional testing on the public water supply and to inform the public of the violation. An advertisement alerting residents to the violation and paid for by the town appears in today's edition of the Gazette.

The town of Oak Bluffs has at least 10 employees working under personal service contracts, multiple year employment agreements negotiated on an individual basis that usually reward the worker with additional perks and a higher level of pay than other municipal and union employees.

Did you know that it is illegal to roller skate on most parts of Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs? Or that all raw milk and cream sold in Edgartown is supposed to come from cows certified by the town inspector of milk?

And don't even think about driving your horse at a furious or immoderate gait in Tisbury or at an unreasonable rate in Oak Bluffs. Both are also illegal, and could net you a fine, or worse, a night in jail.
