Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

William is a 22-year-old college student who came to the Island this summer to work two jobs and save money for his senior year of school. He was basically cruising through life - enjoying the parties and bars on the Island - before moving on to finish his education and get a job.

The Inkwell Beach is a symbol of pride for many Islanders, especially African Americans, whose families have visited this stretch of sand for generations.

The beach - which is no longer than a football field and bookmarked on both sides by jetties - does not have the royal vistas of Lucy Vincent or the commercial appeal of South Beach.

Plan to Refurbish Beach Stirs Emotion

By JEANNIE VANASCO

Thomas Wirth unrolled a map mounted on two poles and planted them in the sand on Inkwell beach in Oak Bluffs last Thursday morning. Mr. Wirth, who worked as the landscape architect for the PBS programs This Old House and Victory Garden for 20 years, has drafted a design concept for this section of waterfront, in conjunction with the Oak Bluffs Boardwalk to Beach Task Force.

Most people think of the shark as the ultimate symbol of dread, giants with cold lifeless eyes who cruise the ocean looking for swimmers they can tear from limb to limb. The very word itself is used to describe people in society who prey on others or who engage in deceptive practices.

There is probably not an animal in the world more despised or feared then sharks, ranking right down there with snakes and spiders.
