This summer’s heightened public interest in ticks, and the associated illnesses, was reflected by a recent article in the Vineyard Gazette.
A few years ago, the Vineyard Conservation Society (VCS) tasked itself with adding to its traditional mission statement (roughly, “What does VCS do?”) a new vision statement (“Why do we do it?”).
This is not the time to focus on self-interest. But President Trump’s climate policy is clearly a bad deal for Martha’s Vineyard.
Wthout serious planning and active measures to reduce traffic, congestion on our roads will increase, and conflicts will become ever more intense.
Every year on the Vineyard we dispose of millions of plastic shopping bags. Millions. Though they take a variety of paths, almost all eventually end up in the environment.
Beyond the economic forces and aesthetic values that will drive interest in restoring eroding beaches at any cost, there is also a serious environmental argument in favor of beach nourishment via the addition of sand taken from elsewhere.
