The Bishop Feehan runners had no chance. Regional high school junior Jeremy Alley-Tarter opened his stride as soon as he left the starting line in the 800-metre run during last Wednesday’s home meet. He quickly pulled farther and farther away from the competition and crossed the finish line in 1:57:00, a full 10 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

Traffic impacts were a chief concern as informal public discussion around expansion plans for the Vineyard Haven Stop & Shop began before the town selectmen Tuesday night.

The project, which would double the size of the existing grocery store on Water street, will be formally reviewed by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission as a development of regional impact beginning next month. Stop & Shop spokesmen have been meeting with the commission land use planning subcommittee for a number of weeks. The first public hearing before the commission will be held June 6.

With just two weeks to go until Memorial Day weekend, restaurants are making their final preparations for the season: sprucing up interiors, finalizing menus and making new hires. And while most of those hires are waitstaff and kitchen crew, some establishments have new leadership in the chefs themselves. Several Island chefs have moved to new homes, bringing different flavors to establishments from Menemsha to the Tisbury Marketplace.

Filming in the town of Tisbury for the ABC Family reality TV show The Vineyard will be largely limited to the Black Dog Tavern, and will require producers to work at a breakneck pace in order to meet a midsummer debut, show producers told selectmen on Tuesday. Producers for the show met with the board to discuss the impact of filming in the town; executive producer David Broome, 25/7 Productions vice president Yong Yam, production editor Brett Blakeney and film producer Karina Fadden were in attendance.

The boys’ varsity tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season against a tough Barnstable squad Monday afternoon. The Vineyarders had not lost a match since June of 2011. Senior co-captain Justice Yennie's 54-match winning streak also came to an end.
