Playing before a large home crowd at the Daniel McCarthy Field, the Vineyarders took a 21-0 loss to visiting Bedford on Saturday afternoon.

Tick season reaches its peak in the month of August, and a group of researchers from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the Environmental Protection Agency took advantage of the warm weather to work on their latest effort in the quest to understand tick-borne diseases.

They trickled into practice at the Vineyard Baseball Park on a recent Monday afternoon, most arriving by 5:30 p.m. and some showing up later. Just about everyone comes from their day jobs, which range from electrician to tennis pro, shellfish constable to store owner. But when the Vineyard Dogfish hit the diamond, it’s all about baseball.

Radio station WMVY officially went on the air 30 years ago. Mornings and evenings bring a flurry of activity to the quiet school campus as football, field hockey, cross country, soccer and golf shake off the summer haze and get down to business.

It’s a time of tryouts, when varsity and junior varsity teams are created, and a time of camaraderie as teammates work through drills and circuits. It is also exhausting.
