Downtown Vineyard Haven has been named as the state’s newest cultural district. The town application was approved during a meeting of the Massachusetts Cultural Council last month, and an announcement was made at the selectmen’s meeting Tuesday.

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks are back in town for the 2014 season with an all-star lineup. The home opener is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at the regional high school field.

The regional high school sailing team competed in the National Invitational Tournament last weekend, placing eighth of 10 teams. The team gained entry into the tournament after competing in the New England Sailing Schools Association championship races on May 17.
