In a historic weekend for Vineyard sports, both the girls’ hockey and basketball squads punched tickets to the playoffs last Saturday afternoon, marking the first time in the regional high school’s history that all four winter varsity teams will compete in the postseason. The boys’ teams qualified for the state tournament earlier this month.

The Eric B. MacLean Memorial Tournament took place last weekend at the Martha’s Vineyard arena, with the Bantam squad taking home the championship trophy and the Peewees finishing third overall.

No matter what level of sport is being played, the adage remains the same: Defense wins championships. And it was on the strength of shot-blocking and rebound-grabbing, as much as their own shots themselves, that the Edgartown girls held off the West Tisbury squad 41-18 Tuesday night in the middle school basketball championship game at the regional high school gym.

On the surface, not much has changed at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard in the past few years. The unassuming building on Pennywise Path in Edgartown still draws Vineyarders old and young searching for the perfect new friend. Inside, shelves of pet care books line one side of the front office, next to a stand of colorful collars and leashes.
