Creative Cast Helps Bring Shakespeare to the Masses

Shakespeare for the Masses is typically an off-season, indoor production. This summer, however, the troupe of intrepid actors and Shakespeare experts have taken their show outside and on the road.

In collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, the show is performed at the Tisbury Amphitheatre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It also pops up at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Vineyard Drive-In.

But despite the venue shifts, the core message from 13 seasons remains the same: “Quick & Painless & Free!”

The Tenth Man written by Paddy Chayefsky first appeared on Broadway in 1959. The play is set in an orthodox synagogue in Queens on a cold winter day in the early 1950s. The schizophrenic granddaughter of an older member of the congregation is brought to the synagogue with hopes that her inner demon — a dybbuk — can be exorcized in a Cabalist ceremony. But there is not yet the requisite quorum of ten men. And our story begins.

To go to the theatre or not to go? That could be the question, except here on the Vineyard this weekend. Shakespeare for the Masses is back and doing Hamlet, the first play the troupe performed when it began five seasons ago. Shakespeare for the Masses is, one could say, a return to the time of Billy the Bard — William Shakespeare to most. When he wrote and produced his plays, Shakespeare was indeed for the masses.

On March 19, 2011 Jonathan Lipsky, a noted Island playwright and professor, died at the age of 66 from a rare form of cancer. Mr. Lipsky was known for his plays, his skills as a teacher and his books and ideas on how to use dreams to further creativity.

Before he died, Mr. Lipsky was asked by his son Jonah, now a senior at Bennington College, which of his plays he would like to see in an anthology, if one were to be created. During his lifetime, Mr. Lipsky had never published his plays.

“His interest was in writing the plays and putting them on,” Jonah said.

’Tis the season for snowflakes and sugar plums.

The 15th Annual Nutcracker Gala takes place this weekend at the Performing Arts Center and just might be the perfect way to start the holiday month.
