Creative Cast Helps Bring Shakespeare to the Masses

Shakespeare for the Masses is typically an off-season, indoor production. This summer, however, the troupe of intrepid actors and Shakespeare experts have taken their show outside and on the road.

In collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, the show is performed at the Tisbury Amphitheatre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It also pops up at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Vineyard Drive-In.

But despite the venue shifts, the core message from 13 seasons remains the same: “Quick & Painless & Free!”

 

 

 

Oh No, Toto, It's Casting Time Again

Kevin Ryan, vice president of Island Theatre Workshop, had one more round of auditions to do. The principals had been cast, as had most of the other roles for ITW’s upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz. Just one group remained: the munchkins.

A group of five children varying in age from second to sixth grade gathered around an out-of-tune piano to rehearse the chorus from Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead. Learning to pronounce the right words and follow the melody is key for the part. Some bravely belted out the tune while others sang shyly looking at the floorboard.

Cupid and Psyche

Sometimes puppets are just a fun diversion and a creative way to tell a story. Next Saturday, June 15, puppets will also help disabled children in Zambia.

Love Letters

To help with the Vineyard Playhouse capital campaign, Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson will perform Love Letters on Tuesday, July 2 at the regional high school’s Performing Arts Center. After the show, winners of last year’s Possible Dreams bid will get to meet Ms. Steenburgen and Mr. Danson. The list of regrets at not having raised that auction paddle last summer is now very long.

IMP Camp Arrives

The Vineyard’s teen improvisational group the IMPers is inviting children and teens ages 6 to 18 to the IMP All Things Theater camp. The sessions are held in three separate locations throughout the summer and allow participants an opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatrical performance and improv.

Island Theatre Workshop and Vineyard Playhouse Auditions Begin

Calling all Island thespians: it’s audition weekend and time to strut your inner scarecrow, mad monkey or one of Shakespeare’s finest.

The Island Theatre Workshop will be putting on a late summer production of The Wizard of Oz and they are currently on the prowl for principal actors. Auditions began on Thursday and continue on Saturday, May 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 12 Music street in West Tisbury. The Island Theatre Workshop is headed to Pooh Corner. Well, Pooh Bear himself won’t be the main attraction but A. A. Milne is the man of the weekend. The woman of the weekend is Taffy McCarthy who directs this play based on works by Mr. Milne.
