While the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland may have drawn the world’s attention away from their troubles, the people of Haiti continue to struggle in the effort to rebuild their shattered nation. This has not escaped the Edgartown School’s parent/teacher organization, who are holding a clothing drive through the end of April to directly benefit the Sacre Coeur Hospital, and the Children of the Promise orphanage, located in Milot, Haiti.

Learn about the growing movement towards home vegetable gardening at a free talk with Chris Wiley, owner of Vineyard Gardens, at the Chilmark Public Library on Wednesday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. Drawing from many years of experience growing with seed and determining the best varieties for the Island climate, Ms. Wiley’s lecture will focus on the what, when and how of planting a nutritious garden in your backyard. Topics include how to get started now with cool season vegetables and what to plant next month when the weather warms up.

This weekend, Pathways Projects, now at the tail end of their winter residence at the Chilmark Tavern off South Road (next to the Chilmark Store), adds some movement to their current exhibition, Forms and Visions.

The premiere of videography by Pathways’ fellows Enid Haller, Diana Gilmore and Kathy Rose, focused on the theme of coastal change, starts on Saturday, April 17, at 6 p.m., with a second screening at the same time on Sunday.

Mussel Talk

New Zealand aquaculturist Kevin Heasman will discuss offshore mussel farming programs as they are run in the southern hemisphere, and the possibility of applying those techniques in Vineyard waters, at the Chilmark library on Wednesday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Chilmark Tavern will introduce back door dinner sales of prepared foods as well as seafood, steaks and sauces for your home grill when the up-Island eatery reopens on May 6, serving dinner Tuesday through Sunday until Memorial Day.

When the restaurant begins seven days a week service at the end of May, through Labor Day, it will feature a daily bring-your-own-booze happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. with a raw bar, signature lobster rolls, burgers and other lighter fare. Full dinners will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m.
