It is the season of En Plein Air, even if you don’t paint. Fall on the Vineyard is an invitation to stroll, to meander, to lay down on the grass (less ticks now) and stare open mouthed at the trees swaying and clouds crawling by, while the sun provides a gentle caress rather than a 100-degree heat slap. Everywhere you look it is a bouquet of beauty which is why there are so many folks outside now, capturing it all on canvas, aka en plein air.

Paper is so embedded in daily life as to be almost invisible. It is a transmitter. The message it bears, whether a scribbled note or a printed contract, is the focal point.

Always wanted to paint outdoors but have been too nervous to set up an easel where everyone can see? Well, Kevin Shea is coming to the Island to help put the possible in plein air painting.

Mr. Shea will hold a painting workshop on Sept. 17 to 19 designed to get one started capturing the great outdoors on canvas. The classes will include demonstrations and instruction for plein air painting, palette setup, color mixing and equipment. Paint and canvas samples are also available.

PeaceQuilts for Haiti founder Jeanne Staples is seeking the Vineyard’s help to secure a $20,000 donation from More Magazine, which is sponsoring an online contest for female entrepreneurs.

Mrs. Staples started the nonprofit PeaceQuilts in 2007. Since then, she’s launched eight quilting cooperatives in Haiti that provide training, materials and mentoring to artisans whose quilts are sold in galleries, in museum shops and online.
