Valentine Estabrook brings her solo show to the Dockside Inn on Saturday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m.. Her works include plein-air pastel and oil paintings of the Island landscape.
The Dockside Inn is located at 9 Circuit avenue extension in Oak Bluffs. Ms. Estabrook will provide a demonstration along with information about online and on-Island workshops.
Gay Head Gallery is currently featuring watercolor landscapes by local artist John Nickerson Athearn. Mr. Athearn is a self-taught artist who inherited much of his inspiration from his grandfather, George Brehm, a painter and illustrator who worked with Norman Rockwell.
This past spring Margot Datz completed work restoring a mural at the Old Whaling Church in Edgatown. The three-month project brought back to life the original mural painted in the 1840s by Carl Wendt. When Ms. Datz began the project the wall was essentially blank, and many did not know anything had ever existed there.
It’s art appreciation night in Oak Bluffs with the Art District Stroll on Saturday, July 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. Seven participating galleries and artistic-leaning shops along Dukes County avenue and nearby will open their doors and invite everyone in to look at and discuss art. Nibbles and wine, naturally, too.
Mint julep anyone? Louisa Gould is bringing the Kentucky Derby to Vineyard Haven as she shares a look at the jockeys, trainers, owners and horses through her photographer’s lens.
How often in nature do we see a single standing beetlebung tree? Not often, thinks Kara Taylor.
“A beetlebung alone is a really unique sight to see,” Ms. Taylor said last week in her new Chilmark gallery space. “Alone, the tree takes this amazing shape. I can only remember one place where I’ve seen this.”
So she decided to paint it.
The wood panel oil painting with 23-karat gold leaf, entitled West Tisbury Beetlebung, is one of 13 paintings in Deciduous, Ms. Taylor’s first show in her new location.
