Oak Bluffs broke ground Thursday on a new wastewater treatment facility aimed at cutting down the amount of nitrogen flowing into nearby Lagoon Pond. 

The select board Tuesday voted to hold a special town meeting on June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Elementary School to reauthorize two borrowing articles that were approved at the 2022 annual town meeting. 

Edgartown is weighing the costs of expensive septic changes as the town’s wastewater treatment facility falters and the Island’s water quality continues to decline.

After months of work to set up a new program to help Islanders replace their aging septic systems, Dukes County officials say they are struggling to attract enough interested applicants. 

When the new year arrived so did a set of costly septic regulations in Tisbury, with 1,500 home systems immediately subject to new rules from the town board of health.

After three years at the helm, Jared Meader will depart from his role as Tisbury wastewater superintendent at the end of this week to take over the superintendent position in Mashpee.
