Thirty years ago, the invention of the electronic fish finder helped fishermen out in their boats find fish. Today’s great device, the computer hooked up to the Internet, helps the rest of us find fishermen who know where to find the fish.

The culture of the Internet has helped charter fishing captains just as it has helped a lot of other businesses.

The weekend of fun and tennis last weekend was a smashing success on all counts. The large gathering at the opening party for the Farm Neck Tennis Open bid generously at the auction to play with guest tennis pros, Luke and Murphy Jensen, along with notable Island pros.

Forty young tennis enthusiasts showed up for the skills and drills games at Vineyard Youth Tennis. And over 75 players showed off their skills at Farm Neck in men’s, women’s and mixed doubles tournament play.

There is no clock on the wall of this yoga class. In fact, there are no walls at all, only the blue sky overhead and the wide open ocean. The laughter and chatter of the Polar Bears and the blare of the ferry horn take the place of the soothing, meditative chants typically played during sun salutations. The 30th annual George Moffett Race will have more than one winner. Organizers of this year’s contest, scheduled for tomorrow, hope all the sailors who participate will walk away from the contest with smiles.

The Moffett Race is that kind of event. It has always been a contest involving a lot of sailing skill and the fellowship of a lot of champions. That’s not too bad for an event that costs only $40 to enter.

School is back in full swing and already there is a test. This time, it’s not a question of passing or failing, but of doing the best trick and bringing home the cash. So put down the number two pencils and break out the skateboards. Saturday, skaters of all ages and all levels are invited to turn out to the Martha’s Vineyard Skate Park, listen to some live music and hop on their boards.

Roy Langley, weigh master for the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, will ring a cowbell at 8 a.m. sharp Sunday morning.

Once that cowbell rings, at the entrance to the official derby headquarters at the foot of Main street in Edgartown, the Vineyard will become an entirely different place.

From that moment on, derby participants can bring in their fish to be weighed in the month-long contest that galvanizes the Island every year.
