Total catch and catch by species during the 2007 annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby recorded large increases over last year’s derby.

The catch was the best since 2004 and among the best in the past eight years for all of the four species.

The total catch of 3,099 fish was 35 per cent higher than in 2006. Compared with 2006, striped bass were up eight per cent, false albacore were up almost 376 per cent, bonito were 204 per cent higher and bluefish nearly four per cent higher.

Protest Global Warming

The Cycling Club of Martha’s Vineyard and the Martha’s Vineyard Peace Council have scheduled a Bike to Fight Global Warming event for Saturday, Nov. 3.

Participants will meet at the Vineyard Haven Lagoon Pond boat ramp by 10 a.m. and proceed on a leisurely ride to Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs. The rain date is Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. Cyclists of all ages are welcome. Participants are asked to wear helmets.

Red Sox fans from the Vineyard to Presque Isle, Me., celebrated a second World Series championship in four years this past Sunday as the hometown nine defeated the upstart but ultimately vulnerable Colorado Rockies in a four-game sweep of the fall classic.

It wasn’t long ago that Red Sox Nation was a Third World country ravaged each fall when the team coughed up division leads, faded from contention or endured painful postseason losses at the hands of villains with names like Bucky, Buckner and Boone.

Beginning today, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will host the two-day fall training conference titled The Many Faces of Trauma at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The conference is an opportunity for Island professionals to learn more effective ways to link services and envision new ways to provide integrated services that will support families.

Asked to describe his team's effort in last Friday's crushing 20-16 loss to the Crusaders from Cape Cod Tech/Harwich, no-nonsense Vineyarders football coach Donald Herman doesn't have to think long for an answer.

"Soft," he said roundly of his team's effort in the loss that effectively eliminated the team from going to the postseason. "We were soft and we were flat. I am not happy with what is going on right now."
