Eat For Life is a new Saturday evening series of free talks by holistic nutritional consultant Lisa Vunk, hosted by Natural Food Barn.
Everyone is welcome to get information and techniques to take control of your health. Weekly lectures will include such topics as the importance of eating organic (Saturday, Jan. 26), what you should know about genetically modified foods, and healthy alternatives to white sugar.

At one of the Island’s smallest boat shops, Rick Brown of Far Cry Boats in Vineyard Haven is working on two. Space is a premium inside his 15 by 36-foot workshop with limited heat. His fragrant shop is at Maciel Marine, next door to John Thayer’s cabinet shop, and has one of the best views of Lagoon Pond. The air smells of fresh-cut oak.

Examine Social Environment
The Island Plan launches its social environment work group with a workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs senior center.
The work group will look at the human aspects of the Island, such as the characteristics of the population and community, social, health, educational and recreational services and culture.
Medication Safety Fair
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has scheduled a medication safety fair in the hospital’s main lobby on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Community members are encouraged to bring their current medications, including any vitamins, herbs and over-the-counter medications, in a bag to the fair, where hospital workers will be assisted by Island pharmacists.
Substance Abuse Grant
The Dukes County Health Council’s Youth Task Force is scheduled to receive a $90,297 grant. The money will be used for a program promoting environmental approaches to preventing alcohol, prescription drug and other substance abuse by youths. Attorney General Martha Coakley notified the task force of the grant.
